The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is being investigated for an in-custody death of a shooting suspect early Monday morning.

The investigation, handled by State Bureau of Investigations, comes after the suspect was was apprehended by police and transported to the hospital where he later died.

According to a statement by CMPD, at around 2:00 a.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Featherstone Drive in reference to a shooting into an occupied dwelling.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located shell casings and the suspect, 32-year-old Jovontay Avery Williams.

Police said Williams “was acting erratically, exhibiting stress and delirium.” At the scene, officers recovered a firearm and drug paraphernalia.

 Officers contacted Medic and then apprehended the suspect without using any weapons.

Williams was transported by Medic to the hospital in life-threatening condition. He was later moved to a second hospital for more intensive care, police said.

Around 10 a.m., Williams was pronounced deceased while in the care of hospital staff at Northeast Medical Center. 

CMPD Internal Affairs is separately investigating the actions of the officers for misconduct. CMPD’s Violent Crimes Division is investigating the initial crimes that led to the call for service.
