To kick off Black History Month, a local therapist has started a program to benefit local Black artists.

After hearing the struggles of a Black creative, Jacqueline Currie created “Charlotte Renaissance: An Urban Revival,” a month-long art pop-up event to display (and sell) the works of local Black artists at local restaurants.

Events will launch Tuesday, Feb. 1, at The Good Year House (2 p.m to 3 p.m.) and on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Golden Owl Tavern (3 p.m. to 4 p.m.).

Both events will feature original artwork by Leon S. Parker, Ajané William and Azjah Stallings.

The artwork will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, with all proceeds going to the artists. Once artwork is purchased, the artists will have 48 hours to create a new piece to be displayed at the restaurants.

Monday

Mecklenburg County will announce a mental health initiative in partnership with the Steve Smith Family Foundation, Alliance Health and Daymark Recovery Services. The Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) facility will be a first-of-its-kind in Mecklenburg County, officials say. Watch it live starting at 9 a.m.

Tuesday

Charlotte City Council will hold its monthly zoning meeting: Watch a livestream on the city’s YouTube channel, starting at 5 p.m.

Sarah Stevenson Tuesday Forum (formerly Tuesday Morning Breakfast Forum): This virtual event will host leaders of She Built This City, a local nonprofit that encourages women of all ages to learn construction trade skills.

Thursday

Stop the Violence Workshop-Restoring our Community: This course provides an introduction to gun violence, analyzing cause and effects, intervention programs and community solutions. This event will be at the Keith Family YMCA at 6 p.m.
